Pandemics, such as the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) outbreak, are a major challenge for society, the health sector and those who communicate with the public for health departments, hospitals, and health-related nonprofit organizations. This online course explores digital media strategies relating to global pandemics (with a focus on COVID-19) and develops digital content for nonprofit messaging and campaigns. The class further addresses the following issues:
Concepts of successful digital campaigns
Online audience outreach through social media
Digital media analytics
Misinformation identification and targeting
Development of digital health campaigns in response to the COVID-19 crisis and other types of public health crises/pandemics
Jeanine Guidry, Ph.D.
Originally from the Netherlands, Dr. Jeanine Guidry is an assistant professor with the Richard T. Robertson School of Media and Culture, as well as the Director of the Media+Health Lab. She received her Ph.D. in Social and Behavioral Sciences from the Department of Health Behavior and Policy in the School of Medicine at VCU, her M.S. in Health Sciences from Maastricht University in the Netherlands, and her M.P.S. in Strategic Public Relations from George Washington University.
Her research agenda focuses on the use of visual social media in health, risk, and crisis communication, and her dissertation research studied effective message design development for the future Zika vaccine. Several of her recent projects have focused on the Ebola outbreak, the flu vaccine, the measles vaccine, and the HPV vaccine.
Guidry regularly teaches courses in social media communication, research methods, and health communication, and has published her research on infectious disease communication in journals.
Together with Dr. Marcus Messner, Guidry won the national first-place award in the Best Practices in Teaching Competition sponsored by the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) for the “Global Health and Social Media” open online course.
She regularly presents her work at national and international conferences, such as the International Communications Association (ICA) conference, the DC Health Communication (DCHC) conference, the American Public Health Association (APHA) conference, the EUPRERA (European PR) conference, AEJMC, IPRRC, and the European Association for Communication in Healthcare (EACH) Conference. In addition, her work has been published in Public Relations Review, Vaccine, the Journal of Social Marketing, Health Communication, PRism, and Communication Teacher.
Who should take this online course
The Digital Crisis Communications for Global Pandemics course is ideal for current students, as well as those working in healthcare, communications, higher education, or related professions. While the online course is asynchronous and recordings of lectures will be available, there are some optional live broadcast opportunities. The course also includes guest speakers, online discussions, and project-based activities; the instructor provides a detailed schedule of course activities upon registration. Students are issued Blackboard access to utilize for course materials, activities, and assignments.
There are no prerequisites for this course. The noncredit course is designed for those who wish to study a specialized topic in mass communications.
Those wishing to take this noncredit course (as pass/fail) for $195 register online through the VCU Office of Continuing and Professional Education (VCU OCPE). Noncredit students are not required to take an assessment upon course completion.
