Celebrating National IT Professionals Day: The Industry Powering Innovation

Sept. 16 is National IT Professionals Day, a day to recognize the technical experts whose work keeps computer systems, networks and applications running smoothly. From network engineers and system administrators to software developers and data analysts, these professionals form the backbone of modern business and technology infrastructure.
With strong job growth, competitive salaries and opportunities to make a real impact, IT continues to be one of the most promising fields for students and professionals alike. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment in the computer and information technology industry is “projected to grow much faster than the average for all occupations from 2024 to 2034.” Analysts expect approximately 317,700 openings per year, driven by both the need for new positions and the replacement of workers leaving the field permanently.
And in this rapidly evolving industry, continuous learning is critical. Professionals who upskill and earn industry-recognized credentials are better positioned for career advancement and can better prepare for emerging technologies. Peter Harpur, CEO of Institute of Data, says one of those advancing technologies is artificial intelligence.
“AI is rapidly becoming part of everyday IT, from automating workflows and streamlining software development to strengthening cybersecurity, optimising data management, and deploying AI agents that can operate autonomously,” Harpur said. “Those who can harness these tools effectively will stay ahead.” He adds that IT is no longer confined to back-end systems, but it is increasingly woven into every sector of business and society.
