Michael Huffman, Director
Office of Continuing and Professional Education
Begin your paralegal career
Did you know the paralegal industry is among the fastest-growing occupations in the United States? A noncredit VCU paralegal certificate along with your degree or previous work experience prepares you to be highly competitive in the legal career search.
Paralegals are not just employed at law firms anymore. Almost every industry requires legal assistance: hospitals, real estate firms, government, corporations and more. Most employ paralegals to help with the myriad legal needs they face. VCU is seeking ambitious individuals who want to learn more about the growing Virginia legal community and leave our program with the skills and credentials to be successful in the legal job market.
Start a new career or advance your current one
The noncredit VCU paralegal certificate program, usually offered in downtown Richmond, is distinguished by a focus on comprehensive legal-specific skills such as investigating fact patterns, conducting law-related research and preparing cases for courtroom litigation. This is a great program for someone looking to change careers or looking to advance a legal career in Richmond or other parts of Virginia. The classroom training you receive in the paralegal certificate program can be used in a law office or in many other fields such as real estate, social services and government.
“I really didn't want to go back to school, but I knew if I wanted to change careers, I needed a specialized skill.”
Trying to determine if the noncredit VCU Paralegal Certificate is right for you?
Request to sit in on a class to try out the program. This is available during our next cohort, which begins August 18, 2020.

Convenient and flexible learning
Our noncredit paralegal certificate is designed with the adult learner in mind. Class sessions are usually held weekday evenings at our convenient Richmond campus and are delivered as a balance of live instructor-led classroom sessions along with access to an online exam environment. Please note that the August 2020 cohort will now be held online. If you are interested in enhancing your professional credibility, employment prospects and income potential in the Virginia or DC legal industry, the VCU Certificate in Paralegal Studies is for you.
The legal profession is competitive, especially in and around Richmond, Virginia or Washington DC. To ensure our graduates are qualified for employment after earning a paralegal certificate and prepared for the challenging education in this program, we require the equivalent of four years of professional work experience (which does not have to be in the legal field) or an undergraduate degree (does not have to be in the legal field).
