Makerspace

At VCU’s Makerspace, innovation starts with hands-on experience. Whether you’re building your first 3D-printed prototype or cutting precision parts on a laser system, our Makerspace training courses give you the tools – and the confidence – to bring your ideas to life.

Led by faculty experts at VCU’s College of Engineering and grounded in real-world application, the Makerspace bridges the gap between theory and practice, empowering participants to design, fabricate and problem-solve across disciplines. From hand tools and 3D printing to mills, lathes, and fabrication techniques, you’ll gain practical skills that enhance creativity, employability and technical mastery.

About

Makerspace Training Courses

(Noncredit | Open to VCU students, faculty and staff)

Our Makerspace courses are a hands-on innovation hub where creativity meets cutting-edge technology. Designed for students, faculty and staff, this collaborative environment is equipped with tools for prototyping, fabrication and design – ranging from the fundamentals of 3D printing and laser cutting to learning metal fabrication techniques. Whether you’re building a class project, developing a research prototype or exploring a new idea, the Makerspace Training Courses are your launchpad.

To ensure a safe and productive experience, all prospective students must first complete a Basic Safety Training Course and demonstrate the ability to operate basic equipment before access is granted. Advanced equipment and tools require additional training. Students who complete Makerspace Orientation and General Safety Training, and Modules I, II, and III can also earn a digital badge to showcase their skills.
