Introduction to Sickle Cell Disease
This specialized course is built for the diverse network of people supporting individuals with sickle cell disease, including community healthcare workers, patient navigators, caretakers, and medical professionals. Designed to fit busy schedules, the program delivers foundational knowledge on how the disease deeply impacts patients and their families. It represents a powerful collaboration between the VCU Department of Internal Medicine’s Sickle Cell Disease Program team, VCU Continuing and Professional Education, and LEDstudio, all working together under the Sickle Cell Care Coordination for Achieving Patient Empowerment (SCCAPE) project.
By enrolling, care providers and advocates will gain specific tools needed to better serve their communities and patients. The curriculum equips learners with a deep understanding of the disease's pathology, acute and chronic complications, and the psychological impact on mental health. Ultimately, the program prepares learners to confidently collaborate on pain management, professional care coordination, and the critical handoff when a patient transitions from pediatric to adult medical services.
Open enrollment is available, and participants have 90 days to complete the course from the day of registration. The course can be completed in 3-5 hours.
