In today’s rapidly changing world, skilled instructional designers play a vital role in shaping how people gain knowledge and develop new skills across education, business, healthcare and beyond.

The Foundations of Instructional Design Program introduces participants to the core principles and practices that define this dynamic field. Through a collaborative cohort model, participants will explore the history and theory of instructional design while gaining hands-on experience.

Foundations of Instructional Design

Rooted in learning theory and supported by strategy, instructional design blends creativity and evidence-based practice to help people absorb and apply knowledge efficiently. In VCU’s Foundations of Instructional Design Program, you’ll explore major frameworks like backward design and AGILE, how to assess a learner’s needs, craft curriculum, and manage learning projects from start to finish. Upon successful completion of the program, you’ll not only understand what instructional design is – you’ll also practice it with confidence.
