Moderator: Dr. Carlos Smith is the inaugural director of diversity, equity, and inclusion and the director of ethics curriculum and associate professor in the Department of Dental Public Health and Policy in the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry.


Kimberly Nichele Brown, Ph.D.

Dr. Kimberly Nichele Brown is an associate professor of Gender, Sexuality and Women’s Studies (GSWS) at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) where she formally served as chair of GSWS as well as the Department of African American Studies.


David A. Lanning, M.D., Ph.D.

Dr. David A. Lanning is a professor of surgery and pediatrics in the VCU School of Medicine, the interim Chief Medical Officer (CMO) for the VCU Medical Center, and co-surgeon-in-chief for the Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU.


Melissa Viray, M.D.

Dr. Melissa Viray is the acting director for the Richmond and Henrico Health Districts. She is a board certified infectious diseases and internal medicine physician. She has been closely involved with the COVID-19 response in Richmond City and Henrico County Health Districts, both for containment efforts and for vaccination.
